Undergraduate Admission

Undergraduate courses at Tohoku University offer an excellent opportunity to learn alongside Japanese students in either Japanese or English.

Application procedures at Tohoku University vary depending on the language of instruction.

Program Taught in English (Gateway College)

Gateway College is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program conducted primarily in English. It provides a flexible curriculum that allows students to explore multiple academic fields and choose their area of specialization after enrollment.

Admission is conducted through a comprehensive selection process. Separate admission processes are offered for April and October intake, with different application requirements and selection methods. Applicants are expected to have a strong academic background, demonstrated achievements, and sufficient English proficiency for university-level study.

Eligibility

Applicants must be non-Japanese nationals who meet one of the following criteria by the enrollment date and hold (or are expected to obtain) a "Student" residence status.

Applicants with Japanese nationality (including dual nationality) or permanent residency in Japan are not eligible.

Application Requirements

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

  • Take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) in either June or November of the year preceding enrollment and achieve the minimum scores set by each faculty
    *EJU Subjects: Applicants are required to take EJU subjects designated by each faculty. Please refer to the official application guidelines for detailed subject requirements. Details about the EJU are available here.
  • Submit a TOEFL iBT score of 79 or higher (taken within the designated period specified in the application guidelines; Test Date scores only)
  • Take the Privately Financed International Students Entrance Examination (conducted in Japanese; the selection methods vary by faculty and may include interviews and/or written examinations)

Selection Process

Selection is based on a comprehensive evaluation of application documents, EJU scores, and additional assessments such as examinations and interviews, where applicable.
